Values-Centric Work: How to be politically and socially active as a professional

by Crystal Paradis February 21, 2017
written by Crystal Paradis

“If we leave all the activism to people who do it as a full-time job, we’ll never make the collective impact we need.”

In early 2017, I gave a Pecha Kucha talk. The Pecha Kucha format is a classic win-win for both speakers and audience. The slides advance on a timer (every 20 seconds), totally out of the speaker’s control: if someone plans their talk really well, the timing is impressive; if they’re woefully unprepared, it’s hilarious!

And so, a few months into my recovery from the 2016 election (I worked as a campaign organizer in New Hampshire for the final 6 months of the campaign), I said yes when asked to give a Pecha Kucha Talk. Worst case scenario, it would be at least be hilarious, right?

But the topic I chose was one I took very seriously, because it was something that had been on my mind throughout the election and even more so in the weeks and months that followed, as I searched for my next path. Before joining the campaign, I’d quit my job as Director of Communications at a fast-growing digital marketing agency, for reasons that included a vastly different set of values from my employer.

James Foley, #NHFF, E-TEAM, and the Power of Storytelling

by Crystal Paradis October 20, 2014

As the publicist for the New Hampshire Film Festival, the festival weekend tends to be a complete whirlwind for me.This was my second year in this role for the festival, since joining Vital, the festival’s official marketing partner, in August of 2013. With 123 films screening this year, and over 100 last year, there are so many great stories to tell leading up to and throughout the weekend.

But this isn’t just an event about eating popcorn and watching movies. As NHFF Executive Director Nicole Gregg points out, there is something about the festival that makes the film experience so much more than pulling up a movie on Netflix. More than just bringing great independent film to the Portsmouth audience, NHFF also brings them the storytellers—and the story behind the telling.

Tips for NaNoWriMo 2013 from Esteemed Portsmouth Writers and Authors

by Crystal Paradis October 29, 2013
written by Crystal Paradis

On the cusp of NaNoWriMo 2013, approximately 20 people gathered at the Portsmouth Public Library this evening to get advice and inspiration from published authors and past NaNoWriMo participants. This is my third year participating in NaNoWriMo, but I always find helpful tips at these gatherings—tips that pop into my head as I stare bleary-eyed at the words of my novel as they fill the screen at at a pace altogether too slow for my liking.

My third NaNoWriMo year!

Keeping #4sqDay Community Spirit Alive!

by Crystal Paradis March 29, 2013
written by Crystal Paradis

From my post over on 4sqDay.com, about keeping the 4sqDay spirit of community alive year round!

We Foursquare lovers look forward to April 16th all year. Not only can we get cool specials and swag at our fave local businesses, we can also hang out with people in person that we bump into virtually all year round—the people whose avatar greet us when we open the app to check in, or who taunt us on Twitter when they steal mayorship of a hotly contested venue. On 4sqDay, we gather with our community Leaderboard battlers and break bread and toast glasses—but how can we make that feeling last all year?
Last year, in 2012, our community had a rip-roaring 4sqDay that left me longing to reproduce that convivial feeling on a regular basis with the abudance of amazing people checking in all over our city. This sparked two meetups beyond 4sqDay—4sqFriday and Portsmouth Breakfast Club.

Read the rest of the post here.

Also, remember to sign up for the 4sqDay swag item today—it’s the LAST DAY to get it in time! What is it? I’ll let Doug answer:
